Jody is a survivor of over a decades worth of trauma. She has survived multiple suicide attempts. Jody was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and spent the first 18 months of her life bouncing around the foster care system. It was during her time there, that she first experienced both physical and sexual abuse and severe neglect. After her adoption, she endured further sexual abuse, outside the home, for much of her childhood and early teenage years.

Due to the multiple traumas Jody endured, she spent most of her days and years, in a deep depressive state with active suicidal thoughts and self-harm. After the death of her mother at the age of 19, Jody was determined to move on and start fresh. She continued on with her schooling and life, eventually closed that chapter of the book. However, depression and anxiety continued to build over the years until she finally had an emotional breakdown a few years ago.

Jody was finally diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder, and Anxiety. She also deals with daily chronic suicidal ideations. That breakdown was the turning point and the beginning of her journey towards healing. She went through intensive trauma therapy, which she still continues, and started on a course of medications.

During this challenging time, Jody took a Trauma Informed Coaching and recovery course and then trained to become a Certified Crisis Responder. Jody is a strong advocate for mental health, using her blog Brave Wings (Formerly JodyB2016) to share her experiences with many different aspects of mental health, hoping to educate people about the seriousness of living with mental health issues. She also started a podcast, mentalhealthrawandopen.podbean.com where she provides a platform for others to share their experiences and stories of survival.

Jody’s vision is to put her knowledge and experiences to use, in an effort to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. She started Brave Wings Trauma and Crisis Coaching and Peer Support Groups, with the goal of helping other survivors work through their trauma in a safe environment, full of empathy, compassion, and validation.

When not helping clients, Jody has a love for all animals and spends her spare time as a mental health advocate, reading, writing and following her other passion, soccer. (football)
